Malaysian Health Ministry introduces new law to regulate tobacco and e-cigarette products, addressing health concerns and protecting children.
According to a report by Malaysian news agency on September 24, Dr Muaz Sayuti, Senior Assistant Director of Disease Control at the Malaysian Ministry of Health, stated that the proposed law is eagerly awaited by parents and teachers as it will regulate the registration of all types of tobacco products on the market, including tobacco and e-cigarette products.
Muaaz further explained that the registration of this bill is meant to oversee and understand the ingredients of products. If it is found that these products are harmful to health, the bill has the authority to revoke their sales permits.
He mentioned in an interview with the Malaysian National News Agency that the Ministry of Health is making efforts to push for the passage of this legislation because the current “2004 Tobacco Control Regulations” are under the “1983 Food Act.” It is widely known that tobacco and e-cigarettes are not food, therefore a separate law is needed to regulate these harmful products.
Muaz pointed out that the passing of the new bill is a significant achievement for the Ministry of Health and Society. Various aspects of this bill will specifically address child protection in great detail.
